The Marche of Gwyntarian is the Akron/Kent area chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, an organization dedicated to recreating life in the Middle Ages. Gwyntarian, founded in A.S. 9, (1974) is part of the Barony of Brendoken, in the Kingdom of the Middle.
Formed around 1976 at Kent State University, the name in Welsh is “City of the White Shield”. Gwyntarian was named a Marche in the Barony of the Middle Marches in 1986. Now slightly over 30 years old, Gwyntarian currently is one of four groups making up Brendoken, a confederation style Barony (no central prime city). Gwyntarian is comprised of the membership of Portage and Summit counties in Northeastern Ohio.
The group has traditional strengths in archery, brewing and vinting and general arts and sciences. Rapier has become exceptionally popular in the last 5 years. Armored weapons has also been a core activity since the group’s formation.
